Live & Learn Thursday: Don't Always Stick To What You Know

Thursday, March 27, 2014

The Crafty Practitioner
I am one of those people who tends to find something that I like and repeatedly purchase it/order it/ eat it/ etc. It is not that I don't like trying new things, because I do, but more that I don't like to mess with something that works or that I like.

I have been using the same liquid and powder foundations for like 10+ years. Estee Lauder Double Wear Make Up. I have always liked it, it has great coverage, lasts a long time, and you get a lot when you purchase. Also, it never made my face breakout, I could even sleep in it!

A couple weeks ago I was shopping at Sephora and I felt like I just needed to try a new foundation, something struck me and I felt like it was time. So I grabbed a sales associate and asked her to help me with foundation. I explained to her what I had been using and that I had been using it  F O R E V E R so I was clueless on where to even begin.

She told me about a few and I ended up deciding on "Make Up For Ever- Mat Velvet +" liquid foundation and "Make Up For Ever Duo Mat" powder.

I love them!!!! The finish is amazing. The liquid foundation starts becoming a matte powder type finish as soon as you start rubbing it on. The feel is awesome and totally squashes and sign of grease, the powder is the perfect finishing touch.

I am so happy that I decided to try something new instead of sticking to what I knew!

Live & Learn Thursday Link Up- Completeness

The Crafty Practitioner
Why cant I feel like my family is complete? I wish I could convince myself that "this is it" but I can't. How do people do it? How do they have one child and feel like that is enough and they are done?

Can you learn to feel complete?

I have always wanted three kids. I was an only child growing up and I detested it. I made up fake siblings, I begged my parents to give me siblings, I just wanted siblings! Everyone else had them after all. I told myself that I would never have an only child.

On another note, pregnancy is amazing, magical, miraculous, & breathtaking. I loved it. Feeling baby kicks, movements, hiccups, stretches and rolls was something that make my heart grow two sizes. I cannot fathom not feeling those feelings again. How am I supposed to just erase that longing?

Once you have a baby and you get to see an amazing little person that you created how can you not want to do that again?

These are all reasons why you see most people have multiple kids I am sure. As a matter of fact I feel like most people don't even wait long in between kids many times because the whole experience is just so amazing.

I know that if it was up to me I would already be a mother of two. Then reality sets in, in my life it isn't up to me. I don't get a say in my family size, when I have babies, how I have babies, if I have babies.

Instead I get to yearn for them, pray for them, beg my body to cooperate, spend thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dollars, fail, fail again, cry, and feel completely defeated. I spend some part of every day watching a pregnant woman and just imagining what my life would be like if I was her, how it must feel to be her, wondering if she even knows how lucky she is.

I am 28, it is the age where everyone is having babies therefor it makes it impossible to just remove myself from the situation. I am truly and honestly happy for others that have babies! It just comes with a whole giant mountain of sad for me. That is what I could say is my tagline for my late 20s "Happy for them, Sad for me".

I so want to give Foster a sibling. I want him to be a big brother. He would love to be a brother. I want to see a sibling bond and experience it. I want to watch them grow and play together. Now he is already 2.5 and the age gap will be so big that they won't be playmates and best friends. Add to that the fact that we cannot try to have a baby right now and I am just so hopeless.

The Crafty Practitioner
I love reading birth stories and I think there is a lot that can be learned from them so today for Live & Learn thursday I am posting Foster's Birth Story, ENJOY!

Wednesday, July 20th, I went in to the OB to turn in my second 24 hour urine collection and have an ultrasound. I had been thinking that bedrest had been going well and they were going to just tell me to keep hanging in there. WRONG. My OB said that she was no longer comfortable with me being at home and managing me there and she was going to go call my MFM.

She walked back into the room and said "Lets have a baby!"...... Immediate shock and panic. She said that labor and delivery was full but to head home, pack my bags and be ready because they were going to call me to come in as soon as they had a room that night. She also gave me the "come to jesus" talk telling me that realistically my odds of having a c-section are VERY high. I have an extremely narrow pelvis and my body isnt dilating or effacing on its own yet. I still opted to try for the induction since this is the delivery that I had dreamed about and pictured in my head. I know things dont always go as planned but I wanted to be able to say that I tried everything.

So, I went home and started to rush around the house because NOTHING was ready. My DH had to install the car seat and I had to pack bags for baby and myself and Justin. My house wasnt done being cleaned and the carpet cleaners hasnt come yet... how could this be happening?!
We got to the hospital at 9pm and got our room and got settled in. My OB was in the hospital so she came over and talked to us and it was so nice to see her and know that she was following us all the way.

The first thing that we tried was Cervadil. It is supposed to ripen your cervix and start you dilating. The way that drug works is that you put it in and wait 12 hours and then check to see how it worked. Right before placing the Cervadil the resident came in and checked my cervix because I as having contractions ever 4 minutes steadily but no progress. So, in went the cervadil and12 hours later they checked me (11am the next day) and it had done NOTHING. We were so disappointed and it seemed like such a waste of time.

The next plan was so use cytotech which does the same thing as cervadil but just works differently. The only problem here was that in order to use this drug you have to have less than 12 contractions in an hour and i was having them every 2 to 3 minutes. So, no cytotech.

We went on to pitocin. We upped the dose many times and sometimes had to bring it back down because my worthless contractions were too close together. They did multiple cervical checks but nothing was changing except my cervix was getting softer. They decided that they thought they might be able to force a fingertip through my cervix so they wanted to try a foley balloon to cause my to dilate to 4cm.

By this time I was extrememly frustrated and done. Baby refused to stay on the monitor so there was literally a nurse in the room with us 90% of the time trying to get him on the monitor... my belly was SO sore from them poking that monitor around for hours and hours. I was ready to throw that monitor! Haha.

The resident came in to do that foley and immediately said that he wouldnt be able to get it because of the awkward position of my cervix. He said that he would have to go get another Dr. The new Dr came in and he was about 70 years old and they tell me that he and his father are the 2 doctors that brought this procedure to the US in the 1980s. He starts and let me tell you that it was the most painful thing that I have maybe ever felt. I was emotionally exhausted at this point and the pain added to that I just had had it. He kept asking for different tools and trying to force it when it just wasnt working. After a few minutes I was literaly crying so hard that I was almost screaming and I said I didnt want to do it anymore and the Dr would not stop! My husband and my nurse tried to get him to stop and he wouldnt. Finally he said that my cervix just wouldnt allow it and that I was only the second patient he had EVER had that he was unsuccessful on. Gee, thanks buddy.

After 28 hours of induction and no progress I was ready to throw in the towel so they called my OB and she said she was gonna come in right then and it was c-section time. This is when I panicked and realized I was about to have surgery, eek!

My blood pressure got really high (about 210/140) and they decided that I couldn't walk to the OR, they were gonna have to roll me there in my bed. They did a spinal block and it was surgery time.

At 12:55am July 22nd Foster Everett D_____ was born at exactly 36 weeks, 6 pounds 14 ounces, and 19.4 inches long. He cried immediately and in turn I cried immediately. I could not believe that after all we had been through our miracle was finally here. It was emotional to say the least. I still cry when I think about it.

They took him over to the warmer and worked on him immediately. They then wrapped him up and brought him to Justin and I got to see him for a moment and kiss his head. Then they had to take him to the nursery they said and I told Justin to go with them.

After surgery they took me to the recovery room and I got to see my parents, justin's parents, justin's aunt, and cousin. It was so nice to see them and they were all headed back out to the waiting room to wait and see Foster.

I kept trying to stay awake because I was expecting them to bring me my baby but the first thing I heard was that he was in the NICU with CPAP, oxygen, a feeing tube, IV, and monitors. It broke my heart that he was having such a hard time and I wasnt there with him. They told me that I wasnt going to be able to go to the mother-baby floor right away because I had to be transferred to high risk and be on a magnesium sulfate drip for 24 hours for my sever preeclampsia. I wouldnt be able to see my baby until after that was over.
Worst. news. ever.

Justin and the family all got to go see him and Justing brought pictures to show me. It was so nice to see him but I wanted to hold him so badly. After going through all of that I couldnt believe I didnt ever get to hold him =(

I ended up getting off my magnesium sulfate drip after 12 hours instead of 24 and the next afternoon I got to see my baby boy. It was such an amazing moment to get to look at him and know that he was real.

He spent about 48 hours in the NICU (as did I, haha). Then on Monday we went home.

Tuesday he had some issues and we went to the pediatrician and he had 3 attacks of respiratory distress in the office and we got sent to Children's hospital. He was admitted and we spent every moment there with him. Its so sad to see a tiny little preemie get poked and prodded but we knew it was for the best.

Live & Learn Thursday- Dancing Your A** Off Can Cost You!

The Crafty Practitioner
Welcome to another week of Live & Learn Thursday. This link up is really starting to catch on and it is so fun! I am glad to hear that others are enjoying it too. This week's installment by yours-truly is very important and can save you a heap of money.... fo realz.

This past weekend I learned a very valuable lesson, dancing can not only MAKE you money but it can COST you money. No, I didn't buy a lap dance or anything like that {get your mind out of the gutter!}.

My friend, Jennifer, was turning 29 last Friday so we planned a fun-filled night out to celebrate. We went to dinner at a swanky restaurant down in the Short North called The Pearl. Columbus is actually the 5th rated "foodie-town" in the U.S. and this is the #1 restaurant here right now. They just opened around a year ago {maybe a little less}. None of us had been there before so we were very excited to try out this special joint. I had received recommendations on drinks and food from people that I know ahead of time. We had 7:15 reservations and got there to have a drink and hang out while we waited for our table. I got an awesome beverage called "Pim's Punch" with fresh cranberries in it!

After sitting down we received two appetizers for free from a waitress that went to highschool with my friend, how awesome is that? Here is what we got:

Jalepeno Corn Spoonbread
Crispy Fried Curds

They were really good. We also ordered from seafood from the oyster bar. The birthday girl and her husband order oysters and Justin and I got peel & eat shrimp, which were phenomenal and huge. The entrees were fantastic as well, I had fish & chips over gruyere grits.

We had plenty of drinks flowing at dinner and after dinner we headed for the bars. If there is one thing that any of my friends can tell you it is that when I go out drinking I WANT TO DANCE. I may be the whitest chick ever but I still wanna shake it and embarrass myself when I am out having fun. No sitting and chatting for me.

We went to a bar that had dancing called Cantina and got a table for our husbands to sit at then headed straight for the bar on the dance floor. The drinks were flowing, the music was loud, the dancing felt good. Im sure we looked like a hot mess towards the end of the night because we might have been decently inebriated {wink wink}. Suddenly I met my new best friend for the next 15 minutes, another Penn State Grad.... lord help me. Why must I do this.

I ran to the table to get my phone and show up my fan-ness. After completing my friendship and moving on we went back to the important stuff, dancing!

Fast-forward about 15 minutes and suddenly I realize that my phone is gone from my pocket. OMG! Cue freak out. I began pacing the dance floor staring at the floor {probably zig-sagging}. It was nowhere to be seen. I raced to the bar and asked if anyone turned in a phone (HA!), the bartender basically laughed at me. I had nothing else that I could do.

On the way home I called Verizon and placed a hold on my service. The next morning I had to go drop $640 on a new phone because I had a new iPhone 5 that was only a little over a year old. FML! So this is what I have now:
It is a bright coral iPhone 5c and it adorable. But I would much prefer my cracked screen phone that I paid for already.

Lesson: When inebriated you can be pick-pocketed without noticing because people are creeping all over the dance floor anyways. So, if you plan to bust a move you are best to leave your phone at a table or with a babysitter.

We have a super awesome Co-Host this week- Erica from So Much Sunshine. Her blog is linked below with the hosts of the link up. Check her out and see what lesson she is teaching all of us about today!

Live & Learn Thursday- Cats & Christmas Trees

Wednesday, January 15, 2014

The Crafty Practitioner
As many of you read on Monday we added a new member to our family, a sweet kitten/cat named Tonks! She is 6 months old and full of energy. She gets along great with the dog and so when my husband was out of town this week and I was working long hours I let her stay loose in the house with the dog, all has gone pretty well.

Me being the insanely busy person that I am right now, with a new job I just started (I joined a new practice) and Justin traveling a ton, I have not even started taking down my christmas trees {one in Foster's room and our main one in the family room}. I know this is sac-religious but what is a girl to do when she just doesn't have time?!

I came home from work on wednesday night and Tonks was bouncing off the walls. Foster and I picked up chinese take-out {go ahead and judge me us} and we were sitting at the coffee table eating {go ahead and judge again, seriously go ahead, I don't care} watching Ice Age when all of the sudden the Christmas tree starts to shake. I snap my head over and stare at it. The whole thing is just quivering and the ornaments are shaking.

All of the sudden, half way up the tree from the side facing us, the cat burst from the tree!!! Ninja style. Holy shit. I had no idea this was possible. Maybe because I have always had very overweight cats, or old cats, but none of my cats have ever attempted this. Until Tonks.

Repeatedly throughout the night I would look over and see sights like this:

She was bursting out the sides trying to attack the ornaments. While this was hilarious and entertaining I had to reprimand her because I am pretty sure she was close to breaking my ornaments and taking my 9 foot tree to the ground.

Lesson: Kitten + Christmas Tree = Jungle Gym

Live & Learn Thursday- Oh, The Things I Learn on Instagram

Thursday, January 9, 2014

Welcome to another week of Live & Learn Thursday everyone!
This week I am lightening things up and I am going to share with you the most important things that I have learned about life on Instagram {which I am addicted to}.

Ready, Set, GO!

If practicing medicine doesn't work out for me I can always sell margaritas from fake tits!
Janelle and her mom are apparently capable of smiling when in each others presence, this was shocking to me. They must not have been talking about "KEEFUHHHHH".

I learned that I have been doing my makeup all wrong because if I was doing it better I could make myself look like this:

{pretty sure she has 2 brain cells}

Yes, yes I did read that wrong. I guess this taught me that I have "dick on the brain" but I think that my husband would be the first to argue that point with me.

Some people really do have eyes on the back of their head. Literally.  However, my mom did not, such a liar! ;)

No matter what my selfies are just not matching up, I have GOT to work on my self skills because someone's mom just pulled this off:

Dog-wearing..... Well I didn't even "wear" my baby so this isn't likely to happen but I am not going to say never. Did you know people wear their dogs?!

Look at this carefully.

yep, backwards and totally weird. OUCH! That is a fashion trend that I learned about on Instagram.

There can never be too many imitation Amanda Bynes photos, I laugh EVERY.SINGLE.TIME!

HAPPY THURSDAY! Link Up below.

Live & Learn Thursday- Kitchen Edition!

Happy New Year!

This week I am going to share a recipe that I originally thought was a chicken and "sauce" that I could serve on rice as is after cooking. Well, I LEARNED differently... this ended up soaking up all the sauce and liquid while cooking in the crock pot. Don't get me wrong, this made it incredibly tender and tasty. After living & learning through trying this one I have tweaked the recipe a bit and this is now my recipe for Shredded Chicken Sandwiches!
The Crafty Practitioner
Shredded Chicken Sandwiches
Ingredients:

3 Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts
1 cup Dijon Mustard
1/2 cup Maple Syrup
2 Tablespoon Red Wine Vinegar
Salt & Pepper

Steps:

  1. Rinse chicken breasts any place in ziplock freezer bag.
  2. Mix all ingredients & seasonings in a bowl and the pour into bag over chicken.
  3. Seal, label, freeze flat.
Cooking Instructions:
Thaw in refrigerator overnight or in cool water for 30 minutes.
Place in crock pot and cook on LOW for 8 hours OR on HIGH for 4 hours.
After removing shred chicken with 2 forks and stir in remaining fluid from crock pot.

These are great served on any kind of bun or bread. Also with BBQ or any sauce of your choice!

Live & Learn Thursday Link Up

Thursday, December 26, 2013

Welcome back for another week of the Live & Learn link up. I hope you had a fabulous Christmas and I hope that you got all the awesome prizes that you were hoping for!

I am sure that over this holiday you learned something that is either useful, funny or just plain random that you can share with us and your followers, so lets have it!

My favorite thing that I learned the past few days has been a new game. I had heard it mentioned before but never seen it in stores. I wanted it but found that you can only order it online. Well, before coming up to Grandma's I bit the bullet and ordered CARDS AGAINST HUMANITY to bring up for the "cousins" to play.

Let me tell you..... BEST. GAME. EVER.

Hands Down.

I have never laughed so hard in my life. This black box is full of more gross, crude, hilarious, random, and just plain wrong things than you can even imagine. Put them all together with a group of people that you love and it makes for some of the best nights ever. We played on Christmas Eve and again on Christmas. I must say that I won on Christmas but didn't even come close on Christmas Eve because I was tanked, haha. It was quite fun to play drunk as well.

This game is a must have. Seriously, my abs got a workout!

(Disclaimer: These are not people that I know in the next pictures but how hilarious would this be?!)

Alrighty, time to link up!

Live & Learn Thursday Link Up {#3}- Treasure the ones you love while you still can.

The Crafty Practitioner
This week as I tried to think of my topic, or lesson should I say, for our weekly link up I just couldnt come up with anything because my mind is somewhere else. Tomorrow is the visitation service for a man that loved very much. He is the father of someone that I actually refer to as my "sister". We have been best friends since I was five and she was three. There was one house between our homes. There is no better way to explain it than to say that they are they like my "other family".
My sister and I.

Just hanging out with the siblings that I wanted =)

I am not ready to write a full post about this, but I will after all of the services are over and my head is in a more clear space. For now it is definitely in the forefront of my mind, it is all that I can think about. So, my lesson today is to treasure those close to you while they are still close by.

It sounds simple but with the hustle and bustle of daily life it can be easy to go way too long without seeing or talking to someone. I had plans to go see Allan on sunday and bring him chocolate dipped pretzels that I made specially for him, I moved this date back from the day before since I would be picking up his daughter at the airport. Only I was too late, the pretzels didn't make it to him and I didn't get to give him the huge hug that Momma-Mitchell and I had texted about. He passed away very early sunday morning. I still went over of Sunday and brought the treats to Mom.

My heart goes out to the Mitchell family as they try to accept this huge loss and I pray that they find some comfort in knowing that their father/husband/grandfather will always be with them.

Twerk with Caution!- Live & Learn Thursday Link Up #2

Welcome to the 2nd week of Live & Learn Thursday!
The Crafty Practitioner
{Grab this button on my sidebar}
Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday. I love to dress up, I love to decorate for it, I love to party, I love to drink, I love to pretend that I am 12. All around I LOVE IT. Every year since my husband and I have owned our house we have hosted an annual halloween party. It is by far the best event of the year.  I make jungle juice that contains about $200 of liquor and jello shots. We set up the beer pong tables and flip cup. Trust me, it is not to be missed. We decorate our house and hook up the fog machines. We even set up a big Photo Booth. It is NO JOKE!

Trust me when I say that this is a drunken shit show, there is no other way to describe it. This year I made my costume myself and I was a Loofah. It was phenomenal. Here is a photo:

So, after many {many} games of flip cup and beer pong we were inside dancing and taking pictures in the Photo Booth. Somehow the conversation turned to "twerking". Now the only thing that I have ever known about twerking was a disgusting display that I had seen on the VMAs that looked like this:

Twerking (/ˈtwɜrkɪŋ/) is a type of dancing in which the dancer, usually a woman, shakes her hips in an up-and-down bouncing motion, causing the dancer's buttocks to shake, "wobble" and "bounce".[1] According to Oxford Dictionaries, to twerk is "to dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low squatting stance".[2]

My friends were talking about some type of twerking that I had never heard of! They said that Miley had a video that was all over the place where she was twerking with her legs up on the wall like in a handstand. I couldn't believe my ears!!!! Who could do that?!

Me showing disbelief and not believing that anyone could physically do that turned into everyone daring me to do this amazing feat of skank-dom. Well, turns out I had just enough jungle juice to take them up on this offer.... and then fell on my head.

So, TWERK WITH CAUTION...
